International Charter Academy of Georgia (ICAG) plans to open its doors in Peachtree Corners in August. According to Vice President of Public Relations & Communications for YKK Corporation of America Jessica Cork, the location of the school is still being finalized. An announcement of the location is expected in two months. Applicants for the role of principal are also currently being considered and teachers are being recruited.

Using the Dual Language Immersion Model for Japanese and English instruction, the school expects to open with a student body of 300 kindergarten through 5th grade students. The Japanese Ministry of Education curriculum will be used in the Japanese department. Lower grades will spend more instruction time in Japanese, while higher grades will balance more evenly with English. Core subjects will be taught in both languages to enhance students’ exposure to a wider range of content learning in the target language. In all grades, special attention will be paid to writing, particularly research papers. Students will also have the option to take one to two 45-minute Chinese classes per week.

In addition to learning the Japanese language, pupils will also be exposed to Japanese physical education, music, haiku, cultural events, healthy Japanese food, and Japanese calligraphy.

The school will have a year-round calendar of 190 days. School will typically begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with dismissal on Fridays at 2:00 p.m. Generation Infocus will provide after-school care until 6:30 p.m.

ICAG plans to provide bus transportation, with stops tentatively scheduled for 4600 Roswell Rd. 30342; 8300 Roswell Rd. 30350; North Point Mall 30022; 9700 Medlock Bridge Rd. 30097; and 4975 Jimmy Carter Blvd 30093.

When explaining why the school chose Peachtree Corners, Cork noted the city’s

welcoming attitude to international business. “Peachtree Corners is also a convenient location to many families who have expressed interest in ICAG and is located in Gwinnett County, the most diverse county in the Southeast,” she said.

As a statewide charter school, enrollment is open to any child in Georgia. Applications for August 2018 are currently being accepted. According to Cork, the school expects to draw most of its attendants from Atlanta, Fulton County, Cobb County, DeKalb County, Gwinnett County, and Forsyth County. “We would like to increase enrollment from the Peachtree Corners area in particular,” she added.

In a press release, ICAG quoted Georgia State Representative Tom Taylor (District 79) saying, “Our state needs employees who can speak more than one language, and there is no better time for its citizens to acquire language skills than when they are young. This charter school will also be an excellent educational environment for children with parents who come from Japan to do business in Georgia.”

The school added that its mission is to, “provide the students of Georgia with the skills they need to succeed in our increasingly globalized society.”
