The Assistance League of Atlanta, headquartered in Peachtree Corners, is teaming up with the Gwinnett County Police Department to distribute stuffed teddy bears to comfort frightened children during crisis situations.

Major Everett Spellman and Officer Trent Greene of the West Precinct, Gwinnett County Police Department recently attended a monthly meeting at Assistance League’s Philanthropic Center where they received 60 bears for distribution throughout the county.  “We could definitely feel the energy in the room upon entering this facility and we thank you for your donation of Bears,” Major Spellman said.

The Bears for Children program is one of eight of Assistance League’s philanthropic programs, an organization dedicated to helping adults and children in need in metro Atlanta. Each year, Bears for Children provides thousands of new, child-safe, cuddly bears to comfort frightened children. Hospitals, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and other emergency agencies distribute the bears to children in need of comfort during traumatic and stressful circumstances.

“When a child is in stress, it is great to hug one of our soft, cuddly bears for support,” said the Bears for Children Chairperson Carol Mason. “We all put in a lot of LOVE when we pack our Bears for delivery.”  When the program started in 1988, 25 bears per month were distributed, a number which has skyrocketed to the current gift of 650 bears per month, according to Mason. For the fiscal year ending May 31, 2017, Bears for Children provided comfort to 6,366 children.
