Veterans Monument in Peachtree Corners – details

Originally posted on NextDoor by Susan Nickerson

So Happy to learn the following:
Here is the ethnic & gender rundown of the statues:
• The World War II Era Marine will have some recognizable features of an American Indian – to honor the WWII Code talkers, Ira Hayes, and the 2% or so of the Native Americans who comprise the Armed Forces.
• The Sailor Standing Watch is a Black American, representing the 20% or so of Black Americans who s comprise the Armed Forces and honoring Doris “Dorie” Miller, a cook who was serving on the battleship “West Virginia” at Pearl Harbor and won the Navy Cross for his heroic actions on the fateful day. He was killed later in the war.
• The Air Force Fighter Pilot is a woman to represent the 18% or so of women who comprise the Armed Forces. We picked a woman for this statue because the air Force was the first service to allow women to be in a “direct combat” role. She will also have some Asian features to represent the 1% of Asian descendants who comprise the services. Did you know that the 442nd Infantry Regiment, which was the most decorated in WWII, with 21 Medals of Honor, 62 Distinguished Service Crosses and over 600 Silver Stars, was a Japanese American regiment?
• The Coast Guard Captain will have some Hispanic features to represent the 2% Hispanics who comprise the services.
• The Army Squad Leader and the Minuteman are Caucasian.

The pictures in the video or on the web site are photos of 12” high clay “Modellos” and may not show the features as clearly as the actual sculptures will. All of it will be done by the artist, with the final molds approved by us before the sculptures are cast.

Gwinnett County remains in a Level 2 drought response

Despite the recent rainfall, Gwinnett County remains in the Level 2 Drought Response that was declared in November. Lake Lanier is a large reservoir, fed by smaller streams that have been slow to recover from the drought. As a result, Lake Lanier has been slow to refill and is currently 10 feet below full pool.

For planting, growing, managing, or maintaining groundcover, trees, or shrubs, watering with an irrigation or sprinkler system is allowed on the following schedule:

  • Even-numbered addresses (those ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) and sites with no numbered address may only water on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
  • Odd-numbered addresses (those ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) may only water on Thursdays and Sundays between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

Water Resources encourages residents to make water conservation a priority. Individual actions can collectively add up to big water savings. In addition, Water Resources provides leak detection and low-flow home retrofit kits to help residents conserve water. Both kits are available at the Customer Care counter located at 684 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville during normal business hours.
