NHS Foundation for Excellence GALA Raises Record Amount

Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of community support, the Norcross High School Foundation for Excellence raised a record amount at its April 30 Gala V held at the home of Aaron and Jan Lupuloff.

A final figure has yet to be determined, but it far exceeds the more than $90,000 raised in 2009 and about $65,000 in 2008. In all, the Foundation has raised more than three-quarters of a million dollars for the school since its inception in 2001.

Dawn Muchow, Foundation treasurer, said, “The sale of ‘bricks’ was heavy throughout the evening. We were swamped much of the time with people wanting to donate money for specific equipment, supplies and departments.”

About 530 people enjoyed a night of food, music and socializing, with music provided by Terry Lee and the G.T’s. The highlight of the evening was the induction of Nathan Slaff and Kirsten Mixter Baker into the school’s Hall of Fame. Slaff is the former president of the Foundation, and Baker is a former NHS teacher and coach. Also given special recognition were the Lupuloffs, who have hosted all five Galas, and Kim Janis, who has chaired the event the last two years. J. Alexander’s, which provided the food, and The Printing People, which printed the tickets, were also saluted. The presenting sponsor was Raymond James & Associates.

Jenny Chapin, Foundation co-president, said, “The astounding success of this event is particularly impressive in view of the economic challenges that the Norcross community and nation continue to face. So many people are willing to step up to the plate to continue to make our school one of the best.”

Previous inductees into the school’s Hall of  Fame are Susan Highsmith Graveline, Hil Jordan, Penny Whiteaker, J. Alvin Wilbanks, Dorothy Lewis, Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, Bert Nasuti, Judi Rogers, Lillian Webb, Anne and Kevin Case, Mary Anne Charron, Mike Emery, Lucy Maddox, Chuck Whelan and Collier Westmoreland.

Plans are already under way for Gala VI, which will be held late April or early May of 2011.
